With many of us currently working from home, it seems that we’re becoming more sedentary than normal.

Rather than the usual commute to work which will involve at least some movement, even if that’s just to and from the car, our ‘commute’ nowadays to our desks can often be made in just a few paces.

Instead of our usual wanderings around the office or site visits to customers, we often find ourselves stationery at our desks until we perhaps think to have a lunch break.

This is certainly not healthy.

A survey by the British Heart Foundation in 2015 suggested that heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancers and poor mental health have all been linked to sedentary behaviour.

Sit-stand desks, commonly referred to as “standing desks”, can, however, offer a variety of benefits and encourage a healthier lifestyle.

The more basic models of desk risers simply lift the monitor or laptop off your desk, helping to improve posture and clear your work area, whilst other more substantial desk risers are installed to convert a sitting desk to a standing desk, allowing much more movement of the muscles.

New research suggests that sit-stand desks, which allow office workers to alter their position during the day, may also boost performance at work. The research, carried out within the NHS by Loughborough University, found that employees who reduced time sitting, by using desk risers which allowed them to work whilst on their feet, said they were less tired, more engaged and reported improvements in musculoskeletal problems too.

With 90% of office workers in Scandinavia already enjoying the health benefits of sit-stand desks due to their workplace health legislation, it may not be long before they become the standard in the UK too.
